Elevenses

As the world stops, perhaps changes, I wanted as someone who has been an independent business owner for the past 13 years, to bring a little light and to celebrate those businesses which I rely on at home and away anyway, but particularly so right now.

I remember once being told by someone who lived a dangerous life, that the times they hated were when they felt that they could do nothing for those around them.

Right now, we all feel a bit like that: from older family members self-isolating; to the wonderful people working tirelessly in the NHS; and those who face uncertain futures.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been staring at the prevailing ineffable sadness in the grey sky and wondering why?

But, and there is always a but, we will overcome.

What has been heartening is seeing my local community come together. People going out of their way to help others. That kindness and caring we often hashtag does exist. It’s also been a period where that small scale, shop local, and independent economy that we all crave has taken over. Where those who are in touch with their products rather than staring at spreadsheets, are able to provide those moments during this storm which reminds us that the sunshine will come again.

First up, Rye Bakery.

Rye’s bread is great. We know that.

From their Frome former Chapel home to their new chic bakery - as glamorous as an industrial estate next to a train station could ever be - RB keep me in carbs, coffee and conversation. Usually on a Thursday or Friday morning, a loaf of sourdough with another for the freezer; Parisian envy inducing pain au chocolat or a pastry, and one of those sausage rolls; a coffee and chat about records, the weather, anything really.

The food should make it home but often doesn’t: that pastry lamination with its sharp and sweet filling, or the crunch and savoury umami of bread.

Or the fact that, whilst our local supermarkets have been bare and stressful experiences, Rye Bakery have transformed. As well as their wonderful baked goods, offering dairy, pulses, grains, vegetables and protein. All local. To be collected or delivered to those in isolation.

We stand and queue, distant, but connected, with a smile and a conversation.
