Private White Peacoat Revisited

Friday, 29th November, otherwise known as today, is Black Friday.

The kick off to Cyber Weekend and the Christmas Shopping period.

A day, then weekend, then month of extreme bargains. Pounds, dollars and euros saved on those things you really (did not) need.

Each of us is guilty, it’s difficult to be an into ‘stuff’ consumer and not be tempted. Rationalising that this purchase at 40% off is the one which will make me thinner, funnier, sexier and richer.

What’s actually funny is that very little in said bargain bonanza is any good, and with my slightly sanctimonious hat on, buy less & buy better.

Of course the irony hasn’t escaped me as as this website is quite often about ‘stuff’, but it’s the pursuit of what I believe to be the best, those items which are beyond compare.

So, I’m not talking you out of purchasing, just that perhaps, avert your eyes from the super shiny life saving discounts and put your money into something which will still be worth it in 6 months and years time.

Because the best items improve with use, and that box fresh, saved for best notion, is not what we are after, because as my accountant reminds me, i’m not rich enough to wear cheap clothes.

That’s why I’m going to talk about something I’ve spoken about before, one of the first things featured on this website, the Private White Peacoat.

The Peacoat is a perfect example of what Private White do so well, unassuming but chicly practical clothing, for men, who have a life.

So, 15 months on from purchase, what’s new?

Well, I’ll keep it short because, not a lot, just the improvement that comes from good things being used as intended, from the cloth softening bit and the shape becoming my own, although it is still as indestructible as new.

Which given the amount of wear, in all weathers and situations, plus frankly awful treatment I’ve subjected it to, is seriously impressive.

Last and this Autumn and Winter, my constant companion, I’ll never be bourgeois enough to pop the collar, but the cut is good enough to remove any temptation.

Fluid yet sharp, it helps hide a multitude of sins, whether that is the deep pockets carrying spare camera batteries, keys and all the other daily fluff, or simply when I’m layered/overfed.

Because this is something meant to be put on and forgotten about, comfortable, comforting and instilling confidence.

When I’m out taking photos during the appropriate seasons it’s with me; on my back, or flung over something, it never complains, nor shows the strain.

And like all of the best things, those items which are timeless, it isn’t brilliant because of one element, there isn’t some special shout about it down the pub toggle, nor do you stand out like a sartorial plonker.

Just wool woven into 30oz cloth in Greater Manchester, then cut, sewn and finished in Central Manchester.

Indispensable and great, because it just is.
